We paid less for these raw materials than if we would have bought them from other countries. We could also sell the finished products made by our industries to our colonies. Sometimes, local traditions or ways of life are destroyed when a colony is established. This could give Americans a negative reputation in the eyes of the world, especially if we are in a place where we aren’t wanted. Finally, we have to protect these colonies in case of war or threat of attack.
