Russia was the Allied Power that left the war in 1917. The tremendous losses suffered by the Russian people, the sacrifices required of Russians in cities like St. Petersburg, and a disastrous series of defeats at the hands of German and Austrian forces led to a revolution which forced the removal of Tsar Nicholas II early in the year. By the end of the year a group of Communist Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin overthrew the provisional government that had replaced the Tsar. The provisional government had not withdrawn from the war, a major factor in its ouster. The Bolsheviks negotiated the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918, and by its terms gave away immense swaths of land including Ukraine, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. In return, they left the war. However, Germany was forced to give up those territories given to it (much of Poland, the Baltic States, and others) in the Treaty of Versailles that ended the war. The Allies were not hindered by Russia's withdrawal, as the United States joined the war in 1917. Its resources and men would prove to be the decisive factor in Germany's eventual surrender.
