Why do we admire Romeo in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet?

Romeo in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is not necessarily a character to be admired.  Romeo is impulsive from the beginning of the play when he announces his love for Rosaline.  Romeo even goes so far as to say that she has vowed to remain a virgin, thereby wasting her beauty.  Think about what kind of young man would say such a thing and why?  What does he really want from Rosaline?

Romeo also acts with impulsivity when he first sees Juliet.  For him, it is love at first sight.  He has barely spoken to her, yet he claims to love her.  He is very young, rash, and impulsive, traits that lead both characters to their doom.  Should we admire Romeo's lovelorn antics over reason and mature decision-making?  Think about how many mistakes were made that could have been avoided if Romeo had acted with more care.  Both Romeo and Juliet's rash decisions lead to tragic ends.
