The intersectionality theory is used to explain how social identities, related systems of injustice, and group identities intersect to form a whole experience that is unique from that of the component identities. The theory states that all aspects of a person’s identity work together to affect the person’s experiences in the society. A good example of the intersectionality theory in practice is shown by the attached TED talk video, done by Kimberle Crenshaw. In it, an example is given of how race, gender, and a multitude of other small factors, interact to shape the experiences of black women with regards to police brutality in the United States. Through a small experiment, Crenshaw proves that more black males than females who have lost their lives to police brutality in the United States are known by name to the public. This is because black females suffer twice, having both gender and racial issues. Their plight is not completely captured through the lens of gender or race alone, rather by the interaction of the two and a multitude of other small factors.
