They believed that when a government stops protecting the people’s rights, the people have no choice but to replace that government. Since the people who wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence believed that the King and the British government were no longer protecting their rights, the colonists had to declare their independence from Great Britain. Therefore, the colonists were justified in declaring their independence from Great Britain.
