When Daniel asks Joel if he thinks Jesus will help them, Joel tells Daniel that Jesus helped explain several specific points of the Law that have always puzzled him. Daniel is shocked that Jesus, who is only a carpenter, can understand more than the scholars that teach Joel. Joel then proceeds to tell Daniel that Jesus has the ability to take complicated parts of the Law and explain them in understandable terms. Joel also mentions that Jesus's messages are similar to his father's but somehow seem to go beyond. Joel then encourages Daniel to come listen to Jesus with him and invites him to come along on his next visit.

In a federal system, things can be more decentralized.  Of course, the national government still has the power to make laws.  However, the states (or provinces, or whatever the lower levels of government are called) also have the independent power to make laws.  The states are not simply limited to implementing laws that the national government makes.  When the national government does make laws, the laws may at times be implemented in a more decentralized way.  The lower levels of government may be able to have some amount of say in how the laws are carried out.


Overall, the national government has much more power in a unitary system than it has in a federal system.  This means that the laws in a unitary system are generally made and carried out in a much more centralized way in a federal system.

The given integrand is a improper rational function, as the degree of the numerator is more than the degree of the denominator. To apply the method of partial fractions,first we have to do a division with remainder.


`(x^3-x+3)/(x^2+x-2)=(x-1)+(2x+1)/(x^2+x-2)`


Since the polynomials do not completely divide, we have to continue partial fractions on the remainder.


We need to factor the denominator,


`(2x+1)/(x^2+x-2)=(2x+1)/(x^2-x+2x-2)`


`=(2x+1)/(x(x-1)+2(x-1))`


`=(2x+1)/((x-1)(x+2))`


Now let's create the partial fraction template,

How do Mr. Freeman and Ivy react to Melinda's art project created from turkey bones?

In Laurie Halse Anderson's novel Speak, art class is one of the few places Melinda feels comfortable. It is even a place where she can begin to express herself through her art. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that after a depressing and disappointing attempt at Thanksgiving dinner with her family, she decides to "make a memorial for [the family's] turkey," declaring, "Never has a bird been so tortured to provide such a lousy dinner" (pg 61). 

Mr. Freeman, always energetic and supportive, is immediately on board with the project when Melinda brings the bones into class. At the same time, he pushes her to put real thought and effort into the project. When she wants to pile the bones like firewood "(get it?—tree—firewood)" (pg 62), Mr. Freeman pushes her to go further. Eventually, Melinda has the bones glued together like a museum exhibit, with knives and forks positioned like they are attacking it, and a Lego palm tree and Barbie head positioned in the middle of the turkey carcass. 

As Melinda puts it, "Mr. Freeman comes over to inspect. He almost faints with delight" (pg 63). When Melinda can't explain the artwork, Mr. Freeman steps in to help interpret it too: 

"I see a girl caught in the remains of a holiday gone bad, with her flesh picked off day after day as the carcass dries out. The knife and fork are obviously middle-class sensibilities. The palm tree is a nice touch. A broken dream, perhaps? Plastic honeymoon, deserted island?" (pg 64).

This explanation further inspires Melinda. She rearranges the piece so that the Barbie head has a body with the forks and knives, and a piece of tape over her mouth. At this point, readers can more clearly identify that Melinda sees herself as the Barbie. She is the one with tape over her mouth, unable to speak, being supported by a dismal turkey carcass that represents the "holiday gone bad" and a family that can't see her pain to help her. 

Ivy and Mr. Freeman immediately see the somber mood of Melinda's new creation. Ivy says, "It's scary [...] In a weird way. Not clown scary, um, how do I say this? Like you don't want to look at it too long. Good job, Mel" (pg 64). 
Mr. Freeman agrees, saying, "This has meaning. Pain" (pg 65).

Melinda is uncomfortable with their reactions, thinking her work may be bad. Ivy and Mr. Freeman aren't saying that, though. They're impressed with what she's done but they're also troubled by it. They see in it her pain and isolation, especially Mr. Freeman, the more experienced adult. They both care about her and want to to help her, but Melinda isn't ready yet to be more open about her trauma and accept people's help. This is evident at the end of this section: "The bell rings. I leave before he can say more" (pg. 65).

What do you admire or dislike about Rainsford?

While Rainsford may be foolish to go so near the side of the boat (an event that causes his fall into the water and eventual capture by Zaroff), there are quite a number of things about Rainsford in Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" that make this world-renowned hunter admirable.


Perhaps what I admire most is that even though Rainsford loves to hunt, he has no desire to compromise his moral code by hunting humans. Even...

Perhaps what I admire most is that even though Rainsford loves to hunt, he has no desire to compromise his moral code by hunting humans. Even though he is on an island under circumstances that would never allow anyone to know if he were to join Zaroff, it never occurs to him. His integrity is not governed by whether or not someone is watching, but by his unshakable sense of what he knows to be right.



“Tonight,” said the general, “we will hunt—you and I.”


Rainsford shook his head. “No, general,” he said. “I will not hunt.”



Another thing that I admire about Rainsford is his ability to think creatively even while running for his life. While running, he is able to come up with unusual methods not only to protect himself (like climbing the tree), he also adopts methods of defense to remove threats against him (such as Ivan) and engages in unique offensive tactics.



“Rainsford,” called the general, “if you are within sound of my voice, as I suppose you are, let me congratulate you. Not many men know how to make a Malay mancatcher."



Finally, though Rainsford initially experiences a moment of panic, he is able to work past it to do whatever he can to protect himself and survive.


Ironically, while Zaroff looks to find the "most dangerous game" in capturing and hunting unfortunate sailors, Rainsford's abilities to adapt and strategize make him the most dangerous game.
